Boosting Postsecondary Education Performance

The Center for Economic Development has launched a national campaign to get business leaders involved in postsecondary education reform. The report concentrates on “broad-access” institutions (like RUSO). It says that business leaders should focus on broad access institutions that suffer from political neglect by comparison to better-known and more “prestigious” schools. Elite institutions will not be the central players in improving undergraduate attainment. That role will inevitably fall to “broad-access” regional public and private colleges, community and technical colleges, and for-profit colleges. These institutions currently enroll the vast majority of students who pursue education and training beyond high school. And these are the only realistic options to expand capacity sufficiently to educate the large numbers of people – including low income and minority students and working adults who need skills for success in the workforce of the future.
